ABOUT

Toronto Star Photo Contest – 2017

The Toronto Star Photo Contest is a monthly competition that features and celebrates the talent of amateur photographers through provocative storytelling themes.

Open to all – casual photographer and serious semi-professionals welcome

The monthly categories are open to all amateur photographers, from the serious hobbyist to the casual ‘in the moment’ picture-taker. We welcome great images whether they are carefully composed works of photographic art or snapshots that show inventiveness and spontaneity. Entries are also welcome from students and any amateur practicing the art of photography in any style that conforms to the contest rules.

Photography is a discipline like no other – and really blurs the line between professional and amateur. Some of the best photographs are taken by non-professionals and the Star’s new tablet app is an outstanding platform to celebrate and showcase these works.k.

Curated and judged by Toronto Star image professionals – and photography fans

The Star invites photography enthusiasts to weigh in and vote for their favourite images. The Voting Gallery is not only a visual treat to look through, it also features an easy click-to-vote function where fans can show their appreciation for contest photos. Voters can recognize as many images as they like, though they are limited to one vote daily per photo. This voter participation will generate the monthly shortlist of Top 20 images, based on the highest ranking.

Final judging for the contest is done by the Star’s Visuals editor, Taras Slawnych. Taras will make winner selections from the shortlist, looking for photos that demonstrate the photographer’s keen eye and images that have impact, originality and creativity.

Monthly themes

Each month, we introduce a new category. General themes like nature, street and colour will be interspersed with more challenging concepts like numbers, letters and monochrome.

$5,000 in prizes

Each month, the judge will determine one winning photo and five runners-up of exceptional images. The photographer of the winning photo will be awarded $500. Each runner-up will each receive a $50 gift card applicable toward the purchase of camera equipment.

Every day through the month, the ‘editors pick’ will be selected to run on the weather page in Toronto Star Touch, the Star’s free app for tablet. On the last day of the month, the category winner will be announced and the winning photo displayed in a gallery along with the runners-up.

Editor’s picks and curated galleries may also appear on thestar.com and may run in print editions of Toronto Star.

The goal is to showcase the work of individual photographers. Photographers will be fully credited when their work appears, and the work will only appear in connection with Toronto Star/Toronto Star Touch and the contest.
